“Sexual Economies of Early Modern Marriage” in “The History of British Women’s Writing: 1610-1690,” also published by Palgrave Macmillan and edited by Mihoko Suzuki, centers on women’s desires to gain more autonomy within marriage or in choosing their own husbands.

“In 2002, I suffered a life-altering injury that fractured my skull, ruptured my ear drum, and broke my back,” recalls John Ulichney, Penn State Wilkes-Barre 2011 Outstanding Adult Learner of the Year. “The injury left me permanently paralyzed from the waist down.”

After months of rehabilitation in Philadelphia and almost two years of outpatient rehabilitation, he decided to rise above his new limitations.

“Instead of letting the injury drag me down, I decided to make the most of my life by going back to school and becoming a productive member of society again,” Ulichney said.

Ulichney, an Information Sciences and Technology major at Penn State Wilkes-Barre, currently serves as the president of the IST Club on campus, is an active member of the campus Honor Society, and serves as a mentor to incoming first-year students.

Junior and senior electrical engineering technology students at Penn State Wilkes-Barre recently spent time in their EET 497: Special Topics course studying the principles of renewable energy conversion and its sustainability. Their studies include turbo-machinery, hydro power, wind power, solar power, fuel cells, biomass, nuclear power, and geothermal energy resources.

Taking a hands-on approach to learning about solar energy, students examined solar panels, how they work, and how they can adjust a panel’s position for optimum energy production.

“We are the future engineers of the world. Now seems like the right time to expand our knowledge of ‘cleaner energy’ and, who knows, one day we may change the planet,” said Daniel Dymond, a senior in the B.S. Electrical Engineering Technology program.

Dr. Robert Faux, Senior Instructor in Engineering and instructor for the EET 497 course, said, “A student will leave the course with a sense that important energy decisions need to be made based on the realities of energy need versus capacity, the environment, national and global economies, safety, reliability, consumer cost, and transmission.”

Students studying electrical engineering learn detailed knowledge relating to the different aspects of alternative energy. In addition to learning the technical skills, the students evaluate project costs, associated economic impacts, and political and environmental implications.

Penn State Wilkes-Barre Continuing Education is currently offering a limited number of scholarships for students wishing to attend the campus’ Summer Youth Programs.

The scholarships, underwritten by Procter & Gamble’s Live, Learn, and Thrive Program and the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Alumni Constituent Society, help defray the costs of attending the camps at Penn State Wilkes-Barre this summer. The scholarships will cover the cost of the camp tuition and are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis for those who qualify.

Procter & Gamble’s Live, Learn, and Thrive is a global initiative offering assistance in more than 60 countries worldwide with a goal of providing physical, social, and educational support for children and adolescents. Similarly, the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Alumni Constituent Society’s mission is to assist area youth for the purpose of improving the academic and cultural experience of the campus enrollment and the University as a whole.

This summer, Penn State Wilkes-Barre Continuing Education is offering 29 academic and personal enrichment and six athletic camps, including six brand new camps: Field Hockey, Fitness Fun in the Sun, Magical Migrating Butterflies, Trash to Treasure, Weather Wizards, and a two-week Musical Theatre camp. Camps run during the weeks of July 11-15, 18-22, and 25-29.

The camps are designed to engage elementary and middle-school aged children in creative, scientific, imaginative, and physical fitness activities.

“The children love to learn about art, nature, science, and fitness in interactive, engaging environments that are fun. Our instructors come back year after year to create wonderful camp experiences that children will cherish for years to come,” said Georgia Egan, Summer Youth Program Coordinator at Penn State Wilkes-Barre. “Additionally, our high-quality sports camps provide children with the fundamental skills necessary to excel in their sport.”

“The best benefit of all, though, is that the kids are having fun and making new friends,” Egan said.

Some of the other featured camps this summer include: Mad Scientist, Gadgets and Gizmos, Princesses and Fairies, Puppets and Plays, Bionic Kids, Experiments in Flight, and Chess for Champions.

Steve Jones, the voice of the Penn State football and Nittany Lion basketball programs, will address graduates at the Penn State Wilkes-Barre commencement ceremony Saturday, May 14 at 10:00 a.m. in the campus’ Athletic and Recreation Building.

A 1980 Penn State graduate with a degree in speech communication and broadcasting, Jones began doing radio play-by-play of Nittany Lion basketball games during his undergraduate career. He became the voice of the men’s basketball team in 1982 and debuted on the football broadcast with the 2000 Blue-White Game. In all, he has done radio play-by-play for more than 800 Penn State basketball and football games.

Jones’ responsibilities at Penn State also include hosting the “The Penn State Football Show” and the “Penn State Basketball Show” call-in programs every Thursday during the fall and winter, as well as producing the “Inside Penn State Athletics” segments for the Penn State Sports Network five days a week.

He has worked on a number of freelance television assignments for WPSU Television over the last decade, including telecasts of Penn State men’s and women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s gymnastics, and wrestling. He also has worked on the game day coverage of the Emmy Award-winning “Penn State Football Story.”

Richard and Sue Barry of San Rafael, Ca., recently made a gift to Penn State University to create the Steve Jones Student Sports Broadcasting Complex, housed in Recreation Hall at the University Park campus. The new media center will allow student journalists to work in control rooms and an editing lab to produce live sporting events, a unique opportunity for students in the College of Communications. The center will be used for all varsity sporting events at Rec. Hall and can also be used for project review, class presentations, and guest speakers.

Richard Barry and Jones met as students at Penn State Wilkes-Barre and the Steve Jones Student Sports Broadcasting Complex continues a history of philanthropy from the Barrys, who also donated gifts for the Abram Nesbitt III Academic Commons and the John R. Murphy Student Services Center at the Wilkes-Barre campus.

Jones and his wife, Kathy, live in State College and have five children and one grandchild.

During this year’s commencement exercises, Penn State Wilkes-Barre expects to award 58 diplomas to students who are completing six associate and 52 bachelor’s degrees.

“In the classroom I am always willing to lend my knowledge to a student who needs help with a homework problem or in class assignment. Sponsored by my academic advisor, Frouke DeQuilletes, another student and I entered original research in the First Annual PSU Eastern Regional Undergraduate Symposium and received honorable mention.

“My creativity shines through most when I am working at my internship. Solving development issues with innovative ideas has been the key to my success. Currently I intern with a privately owned company Extundo Innovations LLC, operating out of the Scranton Enterprise Center. I am part of a three person development team that creates and maintains websites. I am responsible for coding both the back and front ends of these systems along with creating user friendly interfaces. Working with more experienced programmers has been a great boon to my college career and I have the IST Internship program to thank for it.

“The next project we are working on is called nearbid.com which launches May 5 and will be an ‘eBay of services,’ a site where people will post and bid on many types of jobs

“Having been offered a full time position with Extundo LLC after graduation, I plan to continue my employ with them. Being a part of a local company focused on local interests is something I can be proud of.”

Penn State Wilkes-Barre is pleased to announce the addition of Brian Stanchak as he assumes the position of Athletic Director for the campus.

Stanchak graduated from Seton Hall University in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in sport management. While at Seton Hall, Stanchak also worked with the men’s basketball team as a student assistant/video coordinator, during a time in which the Pirates earned one NCAA and two NIT tournament appearances.

“I am very excited to lead a new era for Penn State Wilkes-Barre athletics,” Stanchak said. “I look forward to continue building the tradition of our athletic programs and establishing a long-lasting legacy that our school and local community can be very proud of.”

Stanchak brings more than a decade of athletic knowledge to Penn State Wilkes-Barre, most recently working as an assistant coach/camp director with Seton Hall’s women’s basketball program where he was responsible for on- and off-campus recruiting efforts; on-the-floor coaching at individual workouts, practices, and games; and organizing and directing all camps. While at Seton Hall, three student athletes who were ranked in the top 100 nationally in their class were signed to play for the university.

Prior to coaching at Seton Hall, Stanchak was the coordinator of basketball operations for the men’s and women’s basketball teams at the University of Pennsylvania for the 2004-05 season – a season during which the Quaker men won an Ivy League Championship and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Stanchak then moved on to serve two seasons as top assistant coach/recruiting coordinator with the women’s basketball team at Fairleigh Dickinson University.

Stanchak said it is his goal to help Penn State Wilkes-Barre’s intercollegiate athletic programs reach their highest potential and establish the intramural and recreation programs as an integral part of the students’ overall college experience.

Stanchak currently resides in Hanover Township and enjoys traveling, outdoor activities, movies, and music.

Penn State Wilkes-Barre provides the benefits of a world-renowned university in a smaller, more intimate setting. Dedicated staff and teachers have helped students of all ages since the campus’ inception in 1916 and continue to provide excellent education and support. Penn State Wilkes-Barre boasts eight Bachelor’s degrees and four Associate’s degrees available from the campus and the ability to start one of more than 160 degrees at Penn State Wilkes-Barre and continue at another campus.

Penn State University is committed to equal opportunity and diversity in both its employees and students. For more information, contact Melissa Gunshannon, Public Information Coordinator at Penn State Wilkes-Barre, at melissag@psu.edu or 570-675-9269.

Members of the Penn State Wilkes-Barre IST Club and Honors Program recently collected donations from campus and community members to donate to Give2TheTroops, an organization dedicated to sending cards and care packages to service members deployed overseas.

Items most commonly requested by deployed troops include hard candy, powdered drink mixes, pens/pencils, envelopes, socks, tissues, popcorn, and other everyday things that are hard to get while overseas. The students of
Penn State Wilkes-Barre collected approximately 400 pounds of goods for Give2TheTroops.

Students Timothy Graham and John Ulichney, accompanied by faculty member William Bachman, drove a car fully packed with donations to the nearest drop off location in Fairfield, Conn., where they met Sgt. Suzanne Lussier, Fairfield, Conn. Police Department Office of Public Affairs, and Maureen Janda, coordinator for Give2TheTroops in Fairfield.

Bachman said Sgt. Lussier and Janda were overwhelmed to think students would travel 400 miles round trip, through two states just to donate to the troops.

A fall donation drive at Penn State Wilkes-Barre is anticipated so that little reminders of home can be delivered to the troops in time for Christmas.

For more information, or details on how to donate, please contact Melissa Gunshannon, Public Information Coordinator, at 570-675-9269 or melissag@psu.edu.

Penn State Wilkes-Barre Introduces Athletic Trainer

For the first time in Penn State Wilkes-Barre’s athletic history, a part-time Athletic Trainer has been hired to work with all 9 of its intercollegiate sports teams. PSU Wilkes-Barre has brought on board experienced Athletic Trainer, Mike Aed, to cover all practices and games, work with student-athletes to prevent injuries, and rehabilitate any student-athletes who may have been injured. Mike has worked at the collegiate level for many years serving as Head Athletic Trainer at Marywood University (2001-08) and Wilkes University (1976-1992). In between, Mike was instrumental in building the Athletic Training Services/Sport Medicine program at Wyoming Valley Health Care System.

Director of Athletics Brian Stanchak stated, “We are extremely excited about taking Penn State Wilkes-Barre athletics to the next level by bringing on an Athletic Trainer who will work with all of our intercollegiate teams on a daily basis. Mike brings invaluable experience that will be tremendously beneficial to all of our student-athletes. This truly is a huge step in separating Penn State Wilkes-Barre from the competition when student-athletes are looking at which colleges and universities to play intercollegiate athletics at. I would like to thank Dr. Davis, Karen Kyle and Kathie Flanagan-Herstek for their help and for sharing my vision for enhancing our Athletic Department.”

Rick and Sue Barry Create $1 Million Scholarship Fund

Penn State Wilkes-Barre has received one of the largest scholarship gifts in its history from two of the University’s most generous supporters, Rick and Sue Barry. The $1 million commitment from the San Rafael, California couple to establish the Rick and Sue Barry Trustee Scholarship will leverage matching funds from Penn State and help more than thirty students with financial need each year. The gift continues the Barrys’ support of the Wilkes-Barre campus, where Rick, a 1980 College of the Liberal Arts graduate, began his Penn State education.

“Penn State Wilkes-Barre serves communities and families that have been hit hard by economic changes, and many of our students face extraordinary financial challenges in earning their degrees,” said Dr. Charles Davis, the campus chancellor. “Scholarships are essential to keeping our opportunities affordable and accessible, and the Rick and Sue Barry Trustee Scholarship will provide flexible resources that we can direct to students with the most urgent need. It’s the kind of visionary generosity that has become the hallmark of the Barrys’ giving to our campus and to the University.”

After earning a bachelor’s degree in political science, Rick Barry pursued a career in the financial industry that included posts at Merrill Lynch, Robertson Stephens Investment Management, and other leading companies. He retired in 2009 as the managing member and portfolio manager of Eastbourne Capital Management, a California-based investment firm he founded in 1999. Sue Barry, a native of the United Kingdom, spent more than twenty years working on the ground at Heathrow Airport.

Over the last decade, Rick and Sue Barry have become leading Penn State philanthropists, with support for programs and projects at both the University Park and Wilkes-Barre campuses. Their gifts have honored several important Penn State figures, including the John R. Murphy Student Services Center, named for the former director of student and enrollment services at Penn State Wilkes-Barre who mentored Rick during his time at the campus, and the Steve Jones Student Sports Broadcasting Complex, celebrating the thirty-year friendship between Rick and the longtime Penn State play-by-play announcer, who met as students at Penn State Wilkes-Barre. They also recently endowed the directorship of the Paterno Fellows Program in the College of the Liberal Arts.

“We feel so fortunate to be able to give back to the institution that helped me to get my start in life, and we hope that through this Trustee Scholarship, we can help other students on their own paths to successful careers,” said Rick Barry. “Supporting Penn State and the Wilkes-Barre campus has been deeply rewarding for both of us, and we are looking forward to meeting the undergraduates who will receive support through our endowment and learning about their ambitions for the future.”

Sue Barry said, “We also hope that this gift will draw attention to the need for philanthropy at Penn State and to the important role that scholarships can play in the lives of students. There are so many ways that alumni and friends can make a difference at the University, and we were pleased to learn about the Trustee Matching Scholarship Program and the opportunity it offers to maximize the impact of our support.”

Through the Trustee Matching Scholarship Program, Penn State matches 5 percent of the total pledge or gift at the time a Trustee Scholarship is created at the $50,000 level or above, making funds available immediately for student awards. This University match, which is approximately equal to the endowment’s annual spendable income, continues in perpetuity, doubling the support available for students with financial need. Scholarships are the top priority of the University’s current fundraising effort, For the Future: The Campaign for Penn State Students, which aims to raise a total of $2 billion by June 30, 2014.

“The Rick and Sue Barry Trustee Scholarship has created important momentum toward Penn State Wilkes-Barre’s campaign goals, and we are deeply grateful for Rick and Sue’s leadership,” said Davis. “Their philanthropy has so often honored others, and I am delighted that this endowment will bear their name and honor their own extraordinary contributions to the success of our campus and our students.”

Penn State Wilkes-Barre recently held its annual orientation program for first-year and transfer students. On Thursday, August 18th, a group of more than 30 current students and recent alumni served as Orientation Leaders and spent time getting to know the newest members of the Penn State family.

Jack Chambers of Creative Educational Concepts led the Orientation Leaders and new students through a series of games and activities designed to stimulate conversation, build relationships, and welcome them to Penn State.

Orientation continued on Friday, August 19th with convocation and introduction of faculty and staff. New students were shown around campus, participated in various discussions and workshops, met with faculty from their respective academic colleges, and enjoyed a campus-wide luncheon.

“Orientation of the new students provides a fantastic opportunity for us, as the faculty and staff, to showcase not only what we can do academically but also the co- and extra-curricular learning opportunities available at this campus,” Student Activities Coordinator, Jackie Warnick-Piatt said. “The learning opportunities offered on campus through both formal programs such as internships and service learning and informal such as club/organization membership and intramural sports help students advance their life skills, self knowledge, personal integrity and leadership.”

Penn State Wilkes-Barre provides a world-renowned university in a smaller, more intimate setting. Dedicated staff and faculty have helped students of all ages since the campus’ inception in 1916 and continue to provide excellent education and support. Penn State Wilkes-Barre boasts eight Bachelor’s degrees and four Associate degrees available from the campus and the ability to start one of over 160 degrees at Penn State Wilkes-Barre and continue at another campus.

Over 250 Penn State students and staff from Penn State University recently gathered at Penn State Behrend in Erie, PA to attend the 2011 Penn State University Summer Leadership Conference.

Seven students from Penn State Wilkes-Barre were chosen to represent the campus during this three day conference, which boasted activities focused around the theme “Penn State Leadership League – Get In The Game.” Students attended workshops, lectures and networked with fellow students from the nineteen campuses of the University College and University Park. Student shared experiences and “Best Practices” among the University’s campuses.

“While there are many facets of leadership that can be covered, the 2011 conference focused in on civic, personal and organizational leadership,” said Jackie Warnick-Piatt, Student Activities Coordinator. “In today’s ever changing world, these three key areas will help build well rounded leaders.”

The keynote speaker, Joshua Fredenburg, also concentrated on personal and civic leadership through his presentation, aptly themed, “Are you a Leader Prepared to Impact the World?”

As the academic year commences, the students who attended the Summer Leadership Conference will become role models for those on campus as they put into practice what they learned over the summer.

How do organizations manage their staffing at a time when healthcare costs keep increasing? One answer is that business leaders have become very creative in how to manage getting work done. They rely on dozens of strategies—including outsourcing, offshoring, using part-time workers, using retirees, requiring mandatory overtime, and many other strategies to get the work done. The keynote speaker, Dr. William Rothwell, will explain how finding the right staff to do the right work is the answer.

Dr. Rothwell is Professor of Workforce Education and Development in the Department of Learning and Performance Systems on the University Park campus of The Pennsylvania State University. He leads a graduate emphasis in workplace learning and performance, preparing future graduates for careers in corporate and government employee training. He had 20 years of full-time work experience in human resource management in both government and business before he became a university professor 18 years ago. Best-known for his extensive and high-profile research and consulting work in succession planning and talent management with dozens of organizations in the U.S. and around the world, Rothwell is a frequent speaker and keynoter at conferences and seminars around the world. He has authored, coauthored, edited, or co-edited more than 300 books, book chapters and articles—including 72 books. He gave 70 talks in 10 nations in 2010.

This past spring, two Penn State Wilkes-Barre students and faculty member Bill Bachman drove from campus to the Fairfield Police Department in Fairfield, Connecticut in order to donate supplies for Give2TheTroops, collected by the Information Sciences and Technology Club.

John Ulichney and Tim Graham traveled to drop off boxes upon boxes of food, beverages, hygeine products and letter-writing paper and envelopes in the lobby of the Police Department.

“When I went on the Give2TheTroops’ website, the closest drop-off point was Fairfield,” Ulichney said, adding that the only drop-off points were in Connecticut and North Carolina. “We were going to ship it up, but it probably would have cost us $300 or $400 to ship it.”

Ulichney said he has a lot of appreciation for men and women serving in the Armed Forces. Graham, who served in Iraq as an active duty U.S. Marine for seven months from 2005 to 2006 and for about a year from 2008 to 2009 as a member of the U.S. Army Reserves, said receiving care packages from Give2TheTroops meant a lot to him when he was overseas. “I know how important this stuff is from experiencing it first-hand. The cause kind of outweighed the distance,” Graham said, adding that troops always appreciate receiving snacks and something to drink besides water.

Graham said a lot of what was donated at the Police Department Friday afternoon is difficult to get at the small post exchanges, or PXs, in Iraq. He added that PXs aren’t everywhere and it was nice to receive care packages from America.

Ulichney and Graham are members of Penn State’s Schreyer Honors College, and Bachman, a faculty member and adviser to the group, went with the two college students and did all the driving. “It was very uneventful, very routine traffic,” Bachman said of the trip from Wilkes-Barre, which Ulichney estimated took between three and-a-half and four hours. “The sun broke through into Connecticut, which was as if Fairfield had planned it that way for us.”

Fairfield Deputy Police Chief Chriostpher Lyddy said the department appreciated the donation and effort by Ulichney, Graham and Bachman in making it. “We are so thankful to our new-found friends from Penn State for making this trek and helping us out with our Give2TheTroops’ effort,” Lyddy said. “We couldn't be more thankful, and I'm sure the recipients on the other end will be very appreciative.”

On Thursday, October 13th, Penn State Wilkes-Barre honored 106 students who were awarded scholarships for the 2011-2012 school year at the annual Scholarship Dinner held at Appletree Terrace. This year, Penn State Wilkes-Barre awarded 265 students approximately $730,000 in scholarships.

In addition to students, approximately 40 scholarship donors also attended the dinner. Students were given the opportunity to mingle with their donors during dinner and be able to personally thank them.

“For you scholarship recipients in attendance; if you take nothing else away from this evening’s program, I ask you to reflect on the generous gifts that have been made by your scholarship donors,” Anthony Shipula, Penn State Wilkes-Barre Director of Development stated in his opening remarks. “It’s our wish that you are able to achieve your dreams of a college education and a successful future, so that in years to come as you reflect on your college experience and hopefully this evening you will seriously consider paying forward your benefactors generosity to future generations by creating your own scholarships.”

Dr. Charles Davis, Penn State Wilkes-Barre Chancellor, presented two Nittany Lion statues during the evening’s program. A Nittany Lion is presented to donors who have completed the funding of their scholarship during the year. A lion was presented to Rick Barry, who in December of 2010 endowed the Rick & Sue Barry Trustee Scholarship. Roger Williams, Executive Director of the Penn State Alumni Association, also received a lion on behalf of the entire Penn State Alumni Association who endowed the Penn State Alumni Association Trustee Scholarship for Penn State Wilkes-Barre in March 2011.

Abby Moules, a freshman bioengineering major and Rick & Sue Barry Scholarship recipient, addressed the group on behalf of all the scholarship recipients. As the program guest speaker, Rick Barry spoke on the theme of Investing in People.
Dr. Rothwell, no stranger to public speaking – he gave 70 talks in 10 nations in 2010 – spoke on the topic of finding the right staff to do the right work. A Professor of Workforce Education and Development in the Department of Learning and Performance Systems on the University Park campus, Dr. Rothwell’s presentation was well received by those in attendance.

“An interesting topic with timely information given the current state of the economy – Bill is an exhilarating speaker who should be brought back for future seminars,” raved one attendee. “It could have gone on all day!”

Dr. Rothwell is best known for his extensive and high-profile research and consulting work in succession planning and talent management; he is a frequent speaker or keynoter at conferences and seminars around the world.

“Bill’s knowledge on the topic of workforce planning was quite impressive,” explained Jane Ashton, Director of Continuing Education. “Our program evaluations were excellent and we plan to invite Bill back to share best practices on topics such as talent management and succession planning and effective technical talent management – both topics in which he has published books. When he spoke, he held everyone’s attention – everyone left the Forum energized and with plenty to talk about.”

Penn State Wilkes-Barre Continuing Education is part of Penn State Outreach, the largest unified outreach organization in American higher education, serving more than 5 million people each year, and delivering more than 2,000 programs to people in all 67 Pennsylvania counties, all 50 states and 80 countries worldwide.

Engineering Open House: Not Your Traditional Campus Tour

On Thursday, October 6th, Penn State Wilkes-Barre’s engineering department welcomed 125 prospective engineers onto the Wilkes-Barre campus for the annual Engineering Open House.

Held for several years on the Penn State Wilkes-Barre campus, the Engineering Open House provides high school students who have an interest in the engineering field an opportunity to not only hear what Penn State Wilkes-Barre has to offer but actually see what they can do with an engineering degree.

“The Engineering Open House is not your traditional campus tour. Students arrive in the morning and are split into groups for company visits,” explains Interim Director of Academic Affairs and Professor of Engineering, Dr. Albert Lozano-Nieto. “The companies selected for visits showcase what different types of engineers do in the real world and how their degrees are put to use.”

This year’s Engineering Open House featured Architectural and Engineering Group in Plains, Frontier Communications in Dallas, Borton Lawson and Quad 3, both in Wilkes-Barre. In addition, Martin Rogers conducted a visit on campus at the Abram Nesbitt III Academic Commons, a project on which they were the consulting engineers.

“This year’s Engineering Open House was outstanding,” said Dr. Wes Parks, Associate Professor of Surveying Engineering. “We had a terrific group of kids that thoroughly enjoyed themselves. I think many of them learned a lot about what the world of engineering has to offer.”

Penn State Wilkes-Barre provides a world-renowned university in a smaller, more intimate setting. Dedicated staff and faculty have helped students of all ages since the campus’ inception in 1916 and continue to provide excellent education and support. Penn State Wilkes-Barre boasts eight Bachelor’s degrees and four Associate’s degrees, as well as the ability to start one of over 160 degrees at Penn State Wilkes-Barre and continue at another campus.

Humanities Laureate Dr. Linda Miller Visits Penn State Wilkes-Barre

On Thursday, November 3rd, the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Offices of Academic and Student Affairs welcomed the 2011-2012 Penn State University Humanities Laureate, Dr. Linda Miller.

Dr. Miller is a Professor of English at Penn State Abington where she has taught American literature since 1984, earning teaching awards including the Atherton Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2004. While Dr. Miller publishes in all areas of American studies, her specialty is in early twentieth-century American literature and art.

Chosen as the 2011-2012 Penn State University Humanities Laureate, Dr. Miller has been traveling among the Penn State campuses giving presentations to both academic and community groups. At Penn State Wilkes-Barre, Dr. Miller spoke on “Ernest Hemingway’s Nick Adams Stories Uncovered In Our Time.” Through dramatic readings and discussion, Dr. Miller led a group comprised of humanities students in discovering the emotional dimensions of Hemingway’s earliest stories.

Following her presentation, Dr. Miller had an opportunity to attend a professional networking mixer with the Penn State Wilkes-Barre English majors.

English Major and upcoming December grad, Ted Carl said of the mixer, “She gave great tips on how to put your English degree to use. It was really nice to get to know her on such a personal level. She is a person that treats you like a complete equal and actually wants to get to know you as a person.”

Rounding out her day, Dr. Miller took a campus tour, met with faculty and staff for a roundtable discussion on “Humanities as a Retention Tool,” and ended her evening with an English faculty dinner.

“Dr. Miller wanted to learn just as much about Penn State Wilkes-Barre and its faculty members, personally and professionally, as we wanted to learn about her,” explained Associate English Professor, Dr. Christyne Berzsenyi. “The day was a complete success not only for our students but for the faculty as well!”
