Women in the Sciences and Engineering (WISE)
Created at Penn State in 1994, The WISE Institute represents an innovative approach to cross-disciplinary interaction among engineers, humanists, scientists, and social scientists to promote the representation and diversity of women in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.
The primary mission of the WISE Institute is to facilitate the entry and success of women in the STEM fields in an environment promoting gender equity by coordinating our efforts throughout Penn State; creating opportunities for women of diverse backgrounds to thrive in the STEM fields; mentoring individuals; and promoting institutional and cultural change.
Penn State Wilkes-Barre is proud to present its sixth Women in the Sciences and Engineering (WISE) program — for young women entering grades 6-8 this fall. This program, funded by Procter and Gamble’s Live, Learn and Thrive grant, will be held on campus at Penn State Wilkes-Barre and led by Timothy Sichler, Penn State Instructor in Engineering.
Build Your Own mBot!
In the 21st century, robots are becoming an integral part of our daily lives. The mBot is an educational robot that allows kids to get hands-on experience with mechanics, electronics, control systems and computer science. When combined with the Scratch graphical programming tool, students will learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively, essential skills for success. In this program, students will assemble the mBot from a kit and program it to carry out several basic tasks. The mBots will stay with their builders at the end of the program.
