Youth Programs
Penn State Wilkes-Barre offers a wide variety of development programs for youth. Students of all ages can enjoy an educational experience in a university setting. Programs are customized to offer each age group the appropriate mix of educational and fun activities. Our youth programs are high quality, interactive and taught by university-approved instructors. Summer Reading Skills Programs
Join us for a summer of building reading skills! We offer programs for all ages, from pre-schoolers to adults. The programs focus on developing phonics skills, comprehension, vocabulary, study skills, speed reading, and most of all, a love of reading that will last a lifetime. Classes are taught by professional instructors from the Institute of Reading Development. Sessions meet once a week for six weeks, and tuition and materials fees vary by program level. Class Schedule:
Program for 4-Year-Olds and Entering Kindergartners:
In this program, we teach beginning phonics and reading readiness skills, and help children develop comprehension and a love of books and reading. This program helps to lay the foundation for a strong start in reading and school (must be age 4 when class begins). Meets Sat., June 22-July 20, 9:30am-10:45am.
Program for Entering 1st Graders:
In this program, we teach phonics, sight words, and comprehension. The program helps children learn to read independently and develop the skills and confidence needed for success in first grade. Meets Sat., June 22-July 20, 11:30am-1:30pm.
Program for Entering 2nd Graders:
In this program, we teach phonics and word-attack skills, fluency, and comprehension. The program helps children become fluent independent readers, build confidence, and develop a love of reading. Meets Tue., June 25-July 23, 9:00am-11:00am.
Program for Entering 3rd Graders:
In this program, we teach comprehension, fluency, and long-word decoding skills. The program helps children become strong, confident readers, able to read longer books with ease. Meets Tue., June 25-July 23, 11:45am-1:45pm.
Program for Entering 4th and 5th Graders:
In this program, our average student makes substantial gains in comprehension, longword decoding skills, fluency, and reading speed. As a result, students can complete homework more quickly and easily, be more successful in school, and become strong, enthusiastic readers. Meets Sat., June 22-July 20, 2:15pm-4:30pm.
Program for Entering 6th-8th Graders:
In this program, our average student makes substantial gains in comprehension while doubling reading speed. We teach the best way to read textbooks, take notes, and study for tests. As a result, students can complete homework more quickly and easily, get better grades, and enjoy reading more. Meets Tue., June 25-July 23, 2:30pm-5:00pm.
Program for Entering 9th-11th Graders:
Our average student doubles reading speed, makes substantial gains in comprehension, and learns study skills. Excellent preparation for the SAT, ACT, and college. Meets Wed., June 26-July 24, 3:30pm-6:00pm.
Program for adults, college students, and entering 12th graders. Meets Wed., June 26-July 24, 7:00pm-9:30pm
